Conversation With A Wonderful Silk Artist and Business Owner

Introduction

Today seems to be a perfect day to introduce my conversation with a wonderful silk artist and business owner, Ana. She lives in the South of France and designs her silk scarf. Initially, she tried many forms of art and fell in love with silk painting. That became her true passion, and that she creates silk scarves. Her scarves are one of a kind. She uses high-quality materials, natural fabrics, and professional dyes. Moreover, she turned her passion for silk painting into a business establishing an Etsy store, @anatreasurebox.

Today is international women’s day. As you may know, on March 8, we celebrate the achievements of women everywhere and raises awareness about gender equality. Of course, on this day, we remind us of the women’s rights movement. In Forbes magazine published April 2020, female billionaires 2020 was 234 compared to 11, 2001. There are more women starting businesses, and more women are college-educated. So it’s the perfect day for me to introduce this conversation with a wonderful silk artist and businesswoman.

Conversation with a Wonderful Silk Artist and Business owner

Q1. How did you start your business and when

After trying many art forms, I fell in love with silk painting which became my “true artistic passion.” I create my scarves in various styles so that everyone can find what they are looking for. This also helps me create scarves that reflect the mood and character of those who wear them. However, they all have one thing in common: vibrant colors!

I opened my Etsy shop in 2018. My studio is located in a beautiful Provence, France.

Q2. How is your business structured, and how do you market?

I am the sole trader. Therefore, I am the one responsible for all the aspects of the business. I sell mostly through Etsy – this is my main platform. Whenever I have my new designs, I upload them there, and I find it is easy to use.

Of course, I also have my Instagram page. This has proven to be an effective idea because it allowed me to reach the international market. It is a very time-consuming social media, though; interacting with people is key there.

Also, I expose my creations in a cafe setting in Avignon and Gallery in Aix-en-Provence and participate in several local artisanal markets.

Q3. Where do your ideas come from

I find a lot of my inspiration from travel. I love discovering new places. And every time I go somewhere new, my head is full of ideas on creating next.

Q4. How did you come up with the capital to start a business?

My business actually started as a hobby, so I used the supplies I already had. Really didn’t need to get any additional fund to start with.

Q5. What was a starting challenge?

The first challenge was finding a high-quality silk supplier that I could use in my creations and a couturier that knows how to work with silk. And after – getting myself out there and to be known.

Q6. How is going and what is your everyday like

It is going better every year as I discover where to find my customers. I don’t really have a typical working day; I’ll do what is necessary on each particular day. One, I can only take care of social media; the other, I can be practicing my painting technics; I could also be looking for inspiration or just taking care of the order.

Q7. What is your plan

I want to expand my business and maybe propose some prints of my designs in the future.

Q8. The business then and now – any challenges because of Covid19

Definitely, Covid changed some plans, but it also gave me more opportunities in terms of an online presence. I concentrated on affords there. And even though I could not showcase my designs in a gallery and cafe anymore, it still gave me an online kick.

Q9. What advice you can give aspiring female business owners

My first advice would be “go for it.” Because there are always so many excuses not to do it, and it is sometimes tempting to put it aside later. But if you start now, you will thank yourself later. You never know where this adventure will take you, but that’s the fun of it. Don’t have any regrets!

Second one “Be consistent”. Do at least a little bit everyday.

And the last “Write everything down” – all my tasks that I need to tackle, all my ideas. That way, I know what needs to be done, and it frees some space in your brain.

The good thing about many women is starting a business and take their lives into their hands. All big business started from somewhere.

Conclusion of Wonderful Conversation with Ana

Through my conversation with a wonderful silk artist and business owner, I have learned that all businesses start somewhere. A simple idea can be developed further. And hobby can be developed into a business. It’s important to start instead of waiting or finding a perfect business plan, perfect everything. Because without starting, there won’t be anything to improve or correct or grow. Sometimes just need to start instead of thinking too much.
