How technology affects my life during the pandemic

How technology affects my life during the pandemic more than ever!!! I am sure we all have our share of technology stories. However, since the pandemic started, it’s more than just a mare tool; it becomes essential for our lives. In reality, we use technology every day of our lives. For example, I get up in the morning, the first thing I do making coffee. I use a coffee machine, and I use a car when I drive to go to work. Some of them are we are using as granted; we don’t even think about it. Can you imagine your life without a phone? I mean a cell phone. Many of us are no longer have a traditional landline anymore, just a cell.

What is technology? According to the Google search I did, technology is a broad term that refers both to artifacts created by humans, such as machines, and the methods used to create those artifacts. This means the word can be used to refer to a way of doing something or a means of organization: for instance, democracy might be considered a social technology.

So it is not a surprise how technology has been changing my life more than ever during the pandemic. Mainly I depend on technology to accomplish my daily living in certain areas more now, and that affects my life. Of course, I have used technology for work ever since I started working; however, I didn’t give any thought. It was part of doing my work. And didn’t think about how technology affects my personal life until I have been living through the pandemic. So how does it affect my life? Here are examples of a few things.

Communication

The first thing ever since the pandemic, I rely on my cell phone heavily. Not that I didn’t use a cell, but even more so now. I can’t walk into the person to ask questions, which I used to do in the office, but now I have to call or text every time I have questions. How many of you not even turn off the phone? If you are like me, you may even take the cell phone with you to bed. Ever since the pandemic, we are focus on using technology whether we want it or not. Using the phone to stay in touch is a good thing, but I also find it not quite fulfilling even though I do face talk. It is not like I am with seeing them and talk.

When I text, it is convenient, but I also notice that sometimes I am not fully focusing; most time, I am trying to do several things simultaneously when I text. For example, I can do zoom training classes and text at the same time. Of course, that caused me not fully to focus, so I often create misunderstandings.

At any rate, I don’t have as much as human touch anymore; I am tech touched. And if you are like me, more likely you don’t live with your parents, so it makes me a bit more lonely even though I consider myself quite an independent woman and not be afraid of spending time with myself. Mainly I couldn’t do many social activities and outings during the pandemic; therefore, I spend awful lots of time confined. I am learning how to communicate without interfacing with people. I am learning how to talk to machines, basically learning how to use technology to communicate.

Shopping

Of course, the other big change is my shopping. When I talk about shopping, it is no longer shopping for clothes. It’s for my daily living items as well. I still go to the department store once a while, but I do more shopping online now. The good thing is that I more or less know what works for me when it comes to fashion. Because of better or worse, I wear a small size, so my choice of fashion is pretty much based on the size I know fit me well. Of course, once a while, I buy things that I know I will alter because the price is terrific; basically, it is on sale and too good to miss it. Usually, I used to go shopping during the weekend; however, I now shop online, and shopping online means if I want to, I can shop every day.

Guess what, so I spend more time than I need shopping. And have you noticed you can spend hours and hours not knowing you spend that much time? Online shopping is a time killer; before you even know it, you spend hours and hours of not productive time. It seems to depend on how I use technology; I can be productive or not so much.

Of course, now I can do my grocery shopping online. Other than fresh veggies or fruits, I can order almost everything now from Amazon. And that’s what is happening. Surely technology puts us everything click of our fingers.

Adapting Technology for New Ways to Learning

The other big change for me is to take my cello lessons via zoom. So basically, I am not getting individual attention for my learning. In the beginning, I felt I was wasting my time somewhat. Yet, since I am learning to play that I thought it is better than nothing. In my opinion, learning a musical instrument is not likely you are learning algebra or history (by the way, the topic I hated most when I was at school until I met one professor who taught us like telling a story), it needs personal attention.

To my surprise, my teacher and I were able to manage. We figure out how to enlarge the screen to show the actual instruction part to at least see it. I notice that I really need to develop my ears, and zoom lessons, it is helping me. Sometimes “necessity is a mother of invention” is true, as Plato said.

How to use Technology for Work

Good and bad, technology affects my work during the pandemic in a way I didn’t imagine, and I am a lucky one because my nature of work doesn’t require me to be in the office, and I could use technology to take care of the majority of work. Unfortunately, some of us lost jobs because they are no longer needed to be in the office due to the office being closed.

So professionals can rely on technology to work, and in some cases, it seems more productive due to avoiding commuting time. However, some jobs are eliminated that force people to evaluate the profession. So technology affects our future work tremendously. As I mentioned, “necessity is a mother of invention,” with the pandemic, I am sure certain jobs will create and will be a high demand.

To stay current and work efficiently, I have to learn how to use technology more effectively and stay current to keep up with it. Otherwise, I will not be able to work as I please. Also, companies will develop more software and need software designers or engineers who can develop it, therefore, shifting job market demands.

How Technology Affects My Life Conclusion

With the pandemic, the use of technology went up considerably, and in some cases, people are forced to adapt to use it. If not, they will be behind the curve and left alongside. I used technology as all of you did before the pandemic, but like given without much thought; however, I see technology affects most in four areas of my life during the pandemic.

First, my communication, without not being physically able to see the people, not reading body language, can create misunderstanding, and even I communicate, I sometimes feel lonely. I have to be careful not to judge quickly and paraphrase to ensure I am getting what the other party wants to say. Second, my online shopping makes me spend unproductive times if I am not careful. Third, for my learning and future learning, I have to use the technology and better adapt, and lastly, I need to stay ahead of my profession by keeping up and learn more about the use of technology.

So knowing technology will always be here and evolving, why not make the most out of it! Let’s use it and learn to use it properly. Let make our life better and convenient.
