My sleep went out of order during the Pandemic
My sleep went out of order during the pandemic. How about you? We all have been having tough times these days. When we went to on self-quarantine, I was sure, like most of us, I wouldn’t expect this would last no more than a couple of months. However, now in September, we are still in a self-quarantine mood, have to wear masks, and hoping the vaccine will be invented soon. Slowly, we are ready to get back to business, but many of us still work remotely. We wear masks, and we wash our hands as often as we can. A new normal is forming. And along the way, my sleep went out of order. Why? There are several reasons why I think my sleep pattern changed.
Pressure
During the pandemic, whether we are aware of it or not, we are under pressure. It did for me. Let’s see what happened. We went through a lot. First, uncertainty about coronavirus and death toll drove us more worries. And coronavirus was declared the pandemic. We had to go to self-quartine. Then came George Floyd’s murder and “the Black lives matter” protests that carried over with disastrous events. With the pandemic, the economy started suffering, and the unemployment rate went up. There is no certainty about what will happen to our job. Moreover, there is political pressure with the election. And now fires and earthquakes.
Daily routine change
As I started to work remotely, my daily routine changed. Usually, I start working when I go to the office, and now I start working as soon as I get up. While I am making coffee, my computer is already on. I start working. Some may work wearing pajamas, I am usually casual, but when I have zoom meetings, I dress up. I am no longer wearing full makeup, though. Also, I am no longer spending an hour on the traffic to commute to my office. When I have to go to the office, my mind already has a checklist, things to do, and time is ticking. But when I work at home, I know everything is here. I mean, I eat whenever I am hungry. I run errands during lunchtime, but I can control my time better. So time is relevant. I work, I eat whenever. In reality, I think I spend more time working. How do you manage to work remotely?
social media distraction
There is also social media distraction. My work has always been my top priority, and I limited myself only to posting Instagram. But during the pandemic, since I can save two extra hours of not commuting, I decide to spend some time on my blog. Also, start thinking more seriously about growing my IG, so there are extra things I have to research, learn, and try. I also want to earn some money, so I started affiliated marketing and started posting Pinterest. www.pinterest.com/fashionbykukanaana.com
Limited Social Activity
During the pandemic, my social life went out of the window. There have been no many cultural places open. My art gallery and museum outings and attending performances were “none.” I haven’t been able to gather with friends. It’s sad when going out of the grocery store has been the peak of our lives.
Netflix distraction
All of these are going on, and easy access to entertainment is Netflix. So I have also been spending more time watching Netflix. And believe me, sometimes, Netflix can suck your time without even knowing. So usually after my work, I end up either working on my blog or watching Netflix and didn’t realize how much time went away and ended up going to bed late.
See, my sleep went out of order during the pandemic. Whether we admit or not, I believe we are all under pressure. Not knowing what will happen, our economy, our job, the stock market, people we care about will be healthy, cope with Covid19, and limited social activity and election schedule. We live in an incredibly unique environment, and dealing with the new norm is the process, and along the way, my sleep habit went out of order.
Adequate sleep is so important. If we can, we should all strive for 8 hours a good night’s sleep. I wrote about the book I was rereading on my earlier blog https://fashionbykukanaana.com/what-am-i-rereading-during-self-quarantine/ and mentioned why 8 hours sleep was so important. I think you will find Matthew Walker, Ph.D. “Why We Sleep” book very interesting https://amzn.to/2ElprKK.
I post every Monday and Thursday. Please follow along. I promise I will get better. Cheers ❤❤
