Why I won’t make new year’s resolutions this year

Happy New Year 2021!

What the year 2020!!! And let me tell you why I won’t make new year’s resolutions this year. We all make some resolutions every year, so I hear. However, the New Year’s resolutions we make, less than 8% of people actually stick to them each year. Here is the article posted in New York Post. www.nypost.com/new-years-resolutions-last-exactly-this-long/ Yet, millions of Americans continue to set goals with high hopes that the incoming year will be better. I don’t blame them. Why not! After all, it’s a new year; we start with a clean sheet of paper to fill in. However, as time goes, we get back to our normal self. I fell into one of those statics, I presume. However, this year, I am not making any resolutions, and let me tell you why I won’t make new year’s resolutions this year.

The first why I won’t make any New Year’s resolution

The number one reason I won’t make New Year’s resolutions this year is mainly for two reasons. The first thing is I am not sure what will happen to our lives due to coronavirus. What happened in the year 2020 in our lives due to the pandemic. It’s something we didn’t expect, and we couldn’t control well. Like hurricanes, mother nature, nobody can fight that. When initially we started “stay home,” we didn’t expect it would last for a long time. And even now, the vaccine is on the way, there are so many uncertainties, and there are so many questions that can’t be answered easily. So it seems to me that even if I make my new year’s resolution, I might not even be able to start. For example, even if I want to join LA Fitness, I can’t. It’s not a realistic resolution for the time being.

The second why I won’t make any New Year’s resolution

The second reason I won’t make New Year’s resolutions because I am tired of feeling that I haven’t accomplished what I set out to do. Each year I create my New Year’s resolution. And as time goes, I don’t even look at my resolution, and by the time I realize it, I am already having another New Year. That’s the time I think where I safely put my resolution away. The resolutions I wrote down. And of course, at the end of the year, when I review and restart my resolution, it’s like “deja vu” all over.

The year 2020 is different. Why? I learned that sometimes we couldn’t help what’s happening, like this pandemic. Nobody expects this would happen even though some books have already written about it. So instead of creating a resolution, I decided that I will reinitiate the 5 areas I focus on.

Every day focus

So I won’t make New Year’s resolutions, that doesn’t mean I won’t do anything. I will still create the five focus areas. However, instead of making New Year’s Resolutions and put aside, at this time, I will check every month and make any adjustments if I need to. So I think this type of plan (I won’t call a resolution) will make better sense and a better chance of accomplishing. So what will be my five focus areas.

Career

The career will definitely be my focus area. I actually work very much in the male-dominated field. There are a handful of women in a power position in my field. Of course, that changed as the years progressed. However, still, a long way to go. To give you an idea, at one point, at our firm meeting I had to attend, among hundreds of people were there, only two women attendees, me and another lady from New Mexico. You can see how quickly I bonded with her. However, my career focus will be different this year. I used to work like crazy hours, but this time, my goal is to create work and life balance.

Health

Health is the most important thing in our lives. In reality, when we are healthy, we don’t value and neglect. I think we take it for granted. However, when you don’t have it, it really hit you, like what I did until I had an accident. When I had to depend on people to take care of things, I realized how important health was. I couldn’t go anywhere. Actually, I couldn’t even dress myself up. And the medication I had to take, it was brutal. The medication made me sleep a lot, but one medication caused another issue; I had to take so many to take care of the side effects of another medication, and so on. You get the idea. That’s why I think it is essential for us to keep ourselves in shape and do self-care. So self-care this year, eat properly, take vitamins, rest, exercise, and sleep.

I used to be quite active, running, fencing, and golfing. Of course, I also have done rollerblading, ice skating, rock climbing. Well, my motto is to try everything I can. So I have most sports other than related water sports like I haven’t done scuba diving. Unfortunately, when I had an accident, I gave most of my sports other than learning the cello.

Finance

Money is significant. I heard many people say, “money is a root of all evil,” I disagree with it. I also hear, “money can’t buy happiness.” I’m afraid I have to disagree with that either. Money is important, and money can buy happiness, but maybe short-time happiness. Money itself can be my blog topic. I mean, I want to have enough, so I don’t have to worry about it. And how much is enough? From my perspective, I want to have enough so that I don’t have to look at the price of what I want to buy. I don’t have to worry about looking at the price when I had to go to the restaurant to enjoy the meal. So finance is critical.

Making money is either I work hard to earn or spend wisely and invest. This year, I want to invest better because I think we will have an exciting stock market this year. So if I can, I will do more research to add value stock to my portfolio.

Personal development

The other area I want to keep track of and want to focus on is my personal development. I believe our mind has to grow as well as we need to keep our body stay healthy. So what should I do? First of all, I need to read more. Not technical books or career-related books, but books make me think, expand my mind. Or I may need to re-read books I already have. There are some books are classic. Everytime I read I always get motivated. And some always take me back to reflect and what kind of person I want to be.

Relationship

The other area I want to focus on is the relationship. I think having a meaningful relationship is important. It may have been hard during the pandemic when we all have to worry about who has what. Since we can’t stop not going out completely, it creates a burden for each other, especially if someone has a pre-existing condition. The other thing is that we are not getting together as often as we used to. Also when I talk about the relationship, it is a vast sense of relationship. It can be family, or it can be friends, or it can be a girlfriend/boyfriend and, of course, husband/wife. So there are many types of relationships that we have. For me, I want to value people who can cheer me up, who can make me better. A person who stands by me. So if someone drags me down, I am going to bravely cut them out of my life. And I will focus more on the relationship that makes me a better person.

Conclusion

So here is 2020. I am ready to say “good-bye” gladly and ready to face a New Year. However, not jumping into “Happy New Year” because I still have to deal with Covid19. So I look at the 2021 outlook with a positive attitude and hope all good things will happen to bring a better life for us. Yet, I am moving more comprehensively. That’s why I won’t’ make New Year’s resolutions this year, and I will focus on the five areas I mentioned all year along.
